Great post Dave! And belated kudos on the new design, looks great.

I was listening to that John Resig podcast yesterday and when that realisation about the mobile browser landscape hits, it hits hard. It's definitely a must-listen.

Thanks for the comment, Auré!

It's definitely a challenge and I think you're right, I probably should have stressed graceful degradation more. Keeping It Simple is super important as well.

WML was pretty cool, but ultimately shortsighted and now totally deprecated by the iPhone.

Again, thanks for stopping by and your insight as a mobile guy.

Good luck on Mobile First. I'm pretty curious if it really is the pathway to awesome.

I think at the moment I'm just checking in Mobile at an early stage, just like I would for IE.

Can't wait to see the final product.

Great article !
You said : "This is so much worse than the IE6 problem, it’s like having 15 IEs."
I would have said "...500 IEs" as we must deal with the old mobiles... and almost each brand and models is different in term of rendering and interpretation of the code.
In my work I have to make some mobile XHTML websites (I don't speak about OML, WML, just XHTML that's what I do) and it's a real nightmare... Design and front-end dev for mobile device is really difficult...
I think that the most important thing to understand is : we can't have the same rendering on each mobile ! We have to deal with and try to learn that fact to our clients... not easy.
In Web design & front-end dev for mobile I think that the graceful degradation is really important... it's one of the most important thing to consider and verify... and of course... test, test and re-test again.

It was a pleasure to read your post, thanks :)
